It’s very likely the bane of every big-hearted entrepreneur’s existence…the idea of actually selling your services/products/offers to make money in your business.
It’s seems like it would be pretty easy; after all, you’re doing work you love and that you know will help people, but when it comes to actually asking to be paid for that work…well it can be downright paralyzing.
But you’ve got to make money in order to have a business, and in order to have a business, you’ve got to sell your work.
Here are some powerful strategies to use when it comes to selling your services (and you might actually end up enjoying the idea of selling!).
#1. Deal and heal the stories you’re telling yourself about selling
If you’re afraid of feeling pushy or icky when it comes to selling, ask yourself why you feel that way. Did you have past experiences where you felt taken advantage of or ripped off when you bought something? Are you afraid of rejection if someone decides not to buy from you? Are you worried about what people will think of you when it comes to selling? All of these can be triggering when it comes to sales and it requires a mindset shift or reframe in order to sell with confidence.
#2. Believe in what you’re selling
It may sound obvious, but if you lack confidence in your work or the results you get, people will pick up on that subconsciously and they won’t feel confident in hiring you. You must passionately believe that what you sell will improve someone’s life in some way; if you have to start off trying to convince them, then you’ve already lost.
#3. Speak to the right people
Not everyone is a good fit for what you have to offer, so don’t waste time trying to convince them they are. Let’s suppose you find an amazing mascara and you tell your friend about it, but she doesn’t wear makeup. No matter how much you rave about this fantastic mascara, your friend isn’t going to be interested.
Your products and services aren’t for everyone, so it’s time to start honing in on who is the best fit for what you offer. Who would you most love to work with and who needs and wants what you have to offer?
#4. Shift the perspective from you to them
Often we get so caught up in thinking about what we’re going to say (think sales scripts and formulaic templates) that we completely miss what the prospective client is saying. We miss out on valuable information that can move them from hesitation to asking how soon they can pay you. Get into the habit of listening to what your right people are saying and speak to them in the words they use to describe their problem. You’ll build rapport and trust quickly and easily…and we all like to buy from people we trust.
The right people are waiting for you to solve their problem, don’t be afraid to share your solution so that you can help them get what they want!
