We’ve all been there
We all have to start somewhere
and we look to those who have gone before us;
those who are doing what we want to be doing, having what we want to have, saying what we want to say…
being who we want to be
and that’s all good…for awhile
emulate: match or surpass; typically by imitation. To strive to equal or excel
I remember back in the 90’s everyone (myself included) wanted the “Rachel” haircut.
You know, the hairstyle that Jennifer Aniston from the show “Friends” made iconic and a style craze.
Women were flocking to their stylists in droves demanding that they make their hair like Rachel from Friends. It didn’t matter whether or not your hair was compatible with that style or not, we all wanted it.
Because we would all look like her if only we had that hairstyle right?
The irony of this of course, is that Jennifer Aniston herself hated the style for several reasons.
One: she thought is was ugly
Two: she couldn’t maintain it by herself.
Three: it didn’t feel like her. When asked to describe her natural style was she said: “Long, natural-looking beachy waves. That feels most like me“.
I see this in the online/entrepreneurial space all the time.
We want to be like a Danielle LaPorte, a Marie Forleo, or a Chalene Johnson; and so we emulate (some more successfully than others).
But here is the hard truth…you.can.not.be.like.them.
ever
The Brands these women have crafted are theirs and theirs alone.
Can they be role models?
of course
Can you admire their work and aspire to achieve their level of success (if that’s what you want)?
absolutely
Can you study their methods and apply specific strategies?
you bet
But at some point you are ready to stop emulating and start innovating.
To start looking at things from your own unique perspective and lens.
To establish yourself as someone with strong beliefs who isn’t afraid to voice them.
To deliberately put yourself out there in a way that only you can.
To recognize that consistency and evolution of who you are and how you show up can coexist when you build a solid Brand Foundation.
To start leading and stop following.
To have your Brand not be a take on someone’s else vision or message, but something that is totally your own.
If this sounds oh so true to where you are now and you are ready to Brand Beyond Compare then…
